How to Unfold is a site-specific piece made in response to the Allée at Snug Harbor, informed by embodied research on the “do-nothing” natural farming method articulated by Masanobu Fukuoka in the 1970s. Relating Fukuoka’s practice of doing “nothing” to the concept of “emptiness” that I’ve encountered in my ongoing study of butoh, I am interested in practicing patience and allowing myself to be transformed by my environment rather than exerting my will. Through this work I pose the question: what is natural?
